Your drop spindle is a magical way to spin fiber, and it will absolutely end up falling onto the ground at some point! I think a few battle wounds on a spindle gives it character, but rough spots and dry wood is something that can easily be fixed.
Materials Needed:
- Wood hydrating product. I use Howard's Feed-N-Wax which can be found in many stores.
- 220 or Fine Grit Sandpaper
- Cloth
Sanding Rough Spots:
I use 220 grit sandpaper to lightly sand any rough areas smooth.
You can lightly sand the design on the whorl as well, just be careful as the design is laser cut into the wood, and you can sand down too deep if not careful.
Polishing and Hydrating Dry Wood:
If the wood is drying out, use a little of Howards Feed-n-Wax, or whatever wood hydrating product you prefer, on a cloth and lightly rub on the wood. Let it sit for a bit, around an hour is what I normally do, and wipe up any leftover oil and wax with a cloth.
My drop spindles are not sealed as I prefer the natural raw wood. Please feel free to seal your spindle with the method you prefer if you want, just know it will add a bit more weight to your spindle.
Have a fantastic time spinning!!
